Patients’ health at stake as CHK’s water tanks become polluted

KARACHI: The underground and overhead water tanks of government hospitals in Karachi are not being cleaned on a regular basis, compelling patients to drink contaminated water, it was learned on Saturday.

An official at Sindh’s largest tertiary care hospital, well known as Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK), told PPI that the underground water tanks of this health facility were not being maintained and cleaned on a regular basis by the hospital administration.

He said that 4,000 to 5,000 patients from Karachi, interior Sindh and Balochistan visit different OPDs of the CHK every day.  The patients and their attendants had been compelled to drink the polluted water of the tanks, while some patients and their attendants used mineral water to avoid water-borne diseases.

This contaminated water is also being supplied to various departments of the hospital and staff colony.

The official said that consumption of contaminated and polluted water could develop water-borne diseases among patients and their attendants.

Similarly, the tanks of Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, Karachi Jinnah Hospital and others are also not being maintained or cleaned for several months due to slackness of the administration.
