Bus driver confesses to running over, killing minor girl

KARACHI: The driver of a speeding bus, which killed a minor girl and wounded her father when it ploughed into a motorcycle on Friday here on the city’s MA Jinnah Road, confessed to the crime saying he was ‘embarrassed’ about the event.

South District Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Javed Akbar Riaz revealed that the suspect, who was identified as Muhammad Salim was arrested late Friday night and confessed to his crime.

“I will accept whatever punishment I’m given,” Salim said, adding that he could not bear to stay after seeing the deceased and subsequently fled. “I will not run away now,” he added.

Muhammad Azam — the owner of the bus — has also been detained, SSP Riaz stated, adding that police have also arrested the persons who torched the buses after the accident.

After witnessing the unfortunate incident — which, according to reports, took place down the road in the vicinity of a school — enraged bystanders torched the two buses that were reportedly thundering towards Numaish area before one of them crashed into the bike.

The crowd even refused to let the fire brigades and members of rescue forces pass through and douse the flames.

According to police sources, the child’s body and the injured father were immediately shifted to a nearby hospital for medico-legal tests and treatment, respectively.

According to reports, it was Sakina’s birthday on Saturday and she was the only child of her parents.
