Nine more Chikungunya cases surface in Karachi

KARACHI: As many as nine more chikungunya suspected cases have been reported throughout the Karachi city, taking the number of the reported cases to 4,035 in the city since 1st January 2017.

As per report issued by Sindh Health Department, a total of 4,765 chikungunya suspected cases have been reported throughout the Sindh province out of which 4,035 emerged from Karachi and 730 from other districts of the province.

A total of 127 chikungunya suspected cases have been reported in Karachi this month, out of which 41 were reported last week.

Experts said that chikungunya is transmitted to humans by infected mosquitoes and the major symptoms include high fever, joint pain, joint swelling, rash, headache, muscle pain, nausea and fatigue. Chikungunya is rarely fatal; the death rate of the disease-affected people is less than one per cent.

In 2016, a total 405 chikungunya suspected cases had been reported from Karachi.
