ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Friday issued contempt of court notice against the interior secretary for non-complaince of court order directing to take off former petroleum minister and leader of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Dr Asim Hussain’s name from the Exit Control List.
Dr Hussain’s lawyer Lateef Khosa informed the two-member SC bench that his client’s name was not taken off from the ECL until Thursday thereby urging the court to initiate contempt of court proceedings against Interior Ministry.
On Nov 16, an apex court bench comprising Justice Mushir Alam and Justice Qazi Faez Isa had ordered the government to strike off Dr Asim’s name from the Exit Control List (ECL), allowing him to proceed abroad for medical treatment.
Justice Mushir Alam said during the hearing: “We read in a newspaper that Dr Asim’s name had already been removed from the ECL.”
“You people must have done the same thing while your party was in power, which is why its happening to you now,” Justice Alam said.
The hearing into the case was later adjourned until November 29, wherein the interior secretary has been directed to file his response regarding the matter.
The PPP leader is accused of corruption in two cases during his stint in the PPP government in the Centre and in one case pertaining to facilitating terrorists at his hospital.
