PTI fails to submit response in foreign funding case in ECP yet again

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has once again failed to submit its response to the Election Commission on Pakistan (ECP) in the foreign funding case.

In 2014, Akbar S Babar, a founding PTI member had filed a petition in the ECP seeking the disqualification of Imran Khan for allegedly obtaining funds from illegal sources and discrepancies in the party’s accounts.

He also claimed that funds worth $3 million were collected by the PTI chief, transferred from illegal channels from the Middle East to bank accounts of PTI members.

The ECP bench was informed that PTI will submit its response at the next hearing.

“We will submit the reply after Islamabad High Court (IHC)’s hearing scheduled for Dec 5,” PTI lawyer told the commission.

Irked by PTI’s response, the petitioner claimed that the case has been pending for the past three years and PTI leaders are resorting to delay tactics to evade the investigation.

The petitioner while talking to the media stated that the ECP was supposed to scrutinise the documents submitted by PTI but the party’s counsel failed to show up again.

The hearing in the case has been adjourned until Dec 12 when PTI’s finance secretary has also been directed to appear.

During the previous hearing, the ECP had given PTI one last chance to submit details of the party’s foreign funding.

Saqlain Haider, PTI counsel had told the bench that details regarding the case will be submitted within two weeks.
