ISLAMABAD: Embassy of Pakistan in Spain Commercial Counsellor and Economic and Commercial Wing Head Dr Muhammad Hamid Ali said Tuesday that Pakistan’s information technology (IT) and marble products have great potential in Spain, and stressed that Pakistani exporters should focus on promoting exports of these products to further improve bilateral trade volume with Spain.

Exchanging views with the local business community during his visit to Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI), Dr Hamid said that Spain was located at a strategic location in Europe and Pakistan should develop close cooperation with it to get better access to the European market.

He said a Mobile World Congress would be held in Barcelona, Spain from Feb 26 to March 1, 2018 and urged Pakistani business community to ensure active participation in this event to explore new business opportunities. He said ICCI should plan a sector-specific delegation focusing on two or three sectors to hold productive and result-oriented meetings with Spanish counterparts, and assured that the Pakistani embassy would extend all possible cooperation to make its visit successful.

Speaking on the occasion, ICCI President Sheikh Amir Waheed said that Pakistan and Spain enjoyed cordial political relations that should be transformed into growing trade and economic relations. He said that Pakistan’s embassy should identify opportunities for Pakistani products in Spanish market and share such information with local businesses, so that businessmen could take measures to exploit business opportunities in the European country.

The ICCI president said that Pakistani foreign missions should facilitate the business community in connecting them with the right counterparts, that would in return help in promoting Pakistan’s trade and exports with foreign countries. He said ICCI would consider taking a business delegation to Spain.

ICCI Vice President Nisar Mirza and Senior Vice President Muhammad Naveed said that Pakistan and Spain have good potential to enhance cooperation between their small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and emphasised that the country’s embassy in Spain should cooperate with ICCI in promoting strong cooperation between SME sectors of both countries.

They also said that the law and order situation had greatly improved in Pakistan, and Spanish investors should be informed about emerging prospects for joint ventures and investment in CPEC projects and other sectors of Pakistan’s economy.
