Following a ban on playing loud music at weddings in Passani, Darra Adam Khel, tribesmen have imposed a ban on hiring female and transgender dancers on weddings, reported Express Tribune.
The Akhurwal Union, comprising of local tribal representatives took the decision to impose a fine on anyone found violating the union’s order. The fine has been set between Rs10, 000 and Rs50, 000.
The union met in Kohat on Friday, drawing a consensus that hired dancers only promoted vulgarity while many people also resorted to taking drugs such as hash, sleeping pills and alcohol on such occasions.
As per local residents, unions were actively involved in addressing issues as per tribal law, however, the presence of militants in the area had affected their role. As the peace in the region is beginning to be restored, they have now re-emerged.
“There are many people who can afford to hire entertainment but there are some who cannot even manage to feed their guests but will call in dancers,” a senior committee member stated.
“In case of a violation, 40 per cent of the penalty will be given to Darul-Uloom Islamia and the rest will be evenly distributed amongst visiting committee members,” Akhurwal Union chief Lal Saeed informed.
The penalty will be collected on Friday as per tribal customs, informed Saeed.
Saeed further clarified that the ban does not include playing music on weddings.
Earlier, acting upon the complaint of Passani residents, a ban was imposed on playing loud music on weddings and as a penalty, the offending couple’s nikah was not to be solemnised.
