Punjab CM orders report about torture of elderly couple

LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has taken notice of the news-item aired on different TV channels regarding torturing of an elderly couple in Multan and has sought a report from the CPO Multan.

In a statement issued here on Monday, he has ordered to investigate the incident and said that legal action be initiated against the responsible persons involved in the incident. The elderly couple were thrashed by the Chehlak police.

Naseem Bibi, 75, and her husband were protesting against the Multan Development Authority (MDA) officials in the Chehlak area for allegedly threatening them to leave their land when the police arrived there and started beating them up.

An MDA official who was accompanying the police took away the couple’s protest banners and tore them. The police then dragged the couple through the street to bring them to their van. The footage shows that SHO Ghulam Murtaza and other policemen roughing up the elderly couple and shoving them into their van.

ROAD ACCIDENT: Chief Minister Shehbaz also expressed a deep sense of sorrow and grief over the loss of precious human lives in a road accident at Shah Hussain Bypass in Khairpur area of Sindh province. He extended sympathies to the heirs of the persons died in the accident and prayed for early recovery of the injured.

“All our sympathies, including that of the Punjab government, are with the bereaved families and we fully share the grief of the aggrieved persons,” the chief minister said in his message.

CONDOLES: Chief Minister Shehbaz, in a condolence message, expressed a deep sense of sorrow over the death of former Chief Election Commissioner Justice Hamid Ali Mirza and prayed that may Almighty Allah rest the departed soul in eternal peace and grant courage and strength to the bereaved family to bear the irreparable loss with fortitude.
