Padmavati’s release deferred, won’t release on December 1

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s upcoming magnum opus film Padmavati has been in the headlines for quite some time now. The film has been embroiled in a spate of controversies. After the escalating protests against the film and life threats to the director and the cast, it has now been learned that the makers have decided to postpone the release of the film. The film, which was supposed to release on December 1, won’t be releasing on the scheduled date anymore.

The release of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmavati has been “voluntarily” deferred, a company spokesperson for the film’s producer and distributor Viacom18 Motion Pictures said on Sunday.

Starring Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor in lead roles, the film has been stalled by controversies over speculations that it “distorts history” and “demeans” Rajput queen Padmavati.

The film will not release on its scheduled date on December 1. A new release date will be announced once the “requisite clearances” are in place, said the spokesperson in a statement.

Meanwhile, the Central Board of Film Certification returned Padmavati’s application on Friday saying it was “incomplete”.
