Twitter has suspended the account of Pakistan Defence after they posted a picture of an Indian girl holding a ‘photoshopped’ placard that read, ‘I am an Indian but I hate India because India is a colonial entity that has occupied nations such as Nagas, Kashmiris, Manipuris, Hyderabad, Junagarh (the poster misspells the city’s name), Sikkim, Mizoram and Goa’.

However, the actual image posted by one Kawalpreet Kaur, who can be seen standing in front of the Jamia Masjid, Dehli shows a completely different placard. It reads, ‘I am a citizen of India and I stand with secular values of our constitution. I will write against communal mob lynching of Muslims in our country. #CitizensAgainst Mob Lynching’.

Pakistan Defence, which goes with the twitter handle @defencepk, generally posts content related to Pakistan Army. However, Pakistan Army hasn’t declared it their official Twitter account that represents its views. Manipulating images and news stories is not uncommon on social media, however, it goes against the policies of social media websites. Once reported, these websites take stern action against the those who violate their terms and conditions.

Social media has become a hub for fake news and images which in turn has become a matter of serious concern, labelled in a recent article by the Telegraph as ‘the greatest threat to free debate and democracy’.

In the past, Pakistan Defence Forum has also been accused of running malicious campaigns against Pakistani journalists, commentators and activists who have been critical of the powerful military and intelligence agencies.

    • Twitter regularly deletes ISIS-linked accounts as well as accounts linked with known terrorist organisations. Your argument is flawed.

  1. Pakistan Defence comprises a bunch of overenthusiastic and often misled fools (mostly youth) who tout themselves as defence analysts, but really are upstarts with super-inflated egos.
Ppl tried convincing them about this very image in question, but they wouldn’t listen. They embarrassed themselves and make Pakistanis look like idiots. More importantly, they have put that girl’s life at risk.
Glad their account has been suspended.
