IG’s authority to be limited as Sindh proposes changes to police law

KARACHI: The Sindh government will table a bill proposing changes to police laws in the ongoing assembly session on Thursday, reports confirmed.

As per reports, the provincial government is amending the Police Act to avoid a similar situation as the one it faced with the present police chief, Inspector General (IG) AD Khawaja.

In April this year, the Sindh government surrendered the services of AD Khawaja to the federal government and appointed Additional IG Sardar Abdul Majeed Dasti, a grade-21 officer, as acting IG. The decision was later overturned by the courts.

The legal changes will limit the authority of the provincial police chief and also define the scope of responsibilities of the home minister in relation to his role in the policing affairs.

The changes will limit the authority of the IG to transfer and post officers of Grade 18 and below only (SP-rank and below).

The tenure of the police chief will remain three years, reports added. According to the proposed changes, the officers bearing criminal records will be barred from being promoted to the next rank.

Sindh Law Minister Zia Lanjar while talking to a local media outlet stated that the present police laws have been in place since 1862, informing further that the government wishes prompt resolution of issues of the police force.
