ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Wednesday decided to give its verdict in Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan’s code of conduct violation case on December 4.
The PTI chief is accused of violating the ECP’s code of conduct in public addresses at Jhelum and Sahiwal prior to by-elections there this year.
Imran Khan had challenged the notices before the Islamabad High Court.
As the proceedings began, PTI counsel Shahid Gondal requested the ECP to adjourn the hearing against the party chairman till the Islamabad High Court’s (IHC) hearing on the case on Nov 29.
Presenting his arguments before the ECP’s five-member bench headed by Chief Election Commissioner Justice (r) Sardar Muhammad Raza Khan, Gondal said that as the case is being heard by the IHC, the ECP should adjourn its hearing.
In response, the chief election commissioner questioned the PTI counsel that has the IHC issued stay order on the hearing and in case it has, the PTI should provide a copy of the judgement.
In case of an adjournment, the decision on the case will be delayed, the chief election commissioner added. Gondal responded by saying that the IHC has halted the ECP from giving its final decision on the case.
The chief election commissioner said that the IHC has not issued any stay order so the ECP will hear the case on Dec 4 and will give its judgement on the same day.
