LAHORE: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Ameer Senator Sirajul Haq on Tuesday said that the process of accountability will remain incomplete until the wealth of the plunderers lying in banks abroad was retrieved.
He was addressing the parliamentary board of the JI at Mansoora.
Sirajul Haq urged the Supreme Court to devise a mechanism for retrieving the trillions of rupees misappropriated from the public exchequer and deposited in banks abroad, and to ensure its recovery through a suo moto notice. He said that the mere trial and arrest of the plunderers would be of little use to the masses until the plundered money was also recovered.
He further said that if the NAB chairman did not open the 180 cases of mega corruption lying buried in the NAB offices, the masses would be justified to assume that NAB remained under the ruling elite’s influence.
The JI chief said that corruption was the root cause of poverty, unemployment and shortage of basic facilities in the country. He said that almost half of the country’s population was facing food shortage whereas 89 percent of the people did not get clean drinking water.
Sirajul Haq said that Finance Minister Ishaq Dar had admitted in the parliament that more than two hundred billion dollars owned by the plunderers were lying abroad. He said that should this money be brought back to the country, not only would it be possible to clear the country’s debt but the burden of taxes on the masses would also be reduced considerably, giving them much relief.
The JI chief noted that the government had not disclosed the names of those behind the recent conspiracy to amend the laws relating to the Khatme Nubuwwat so far.
The meeting was also attended by JI Secretary General Liaqat Baloch, JI deputy chief Mian Muhammad Aslam and JI MPA Dr Syed Waseem Akhtar.
