KARACHI: Winner of the Karachi Biennale 2017 Shahneela and Farhan Faruqui Popular Choice Art Prize Shahzia Sikandar sent a message of gratitude from New York, her place of residence and work.
Shahzia Sikandar’s piece ‘Disruption as Rapture’ received the Shahneela and Farhan Faruqui Popular Choice Art Prize. The award was a secret ballot prize, offering visitors at the 12 venues of the exhibitions a chance to vote for their favourite piece of art, providing an opportunity to them to engage with and respond to the works on display.
Apart from a prize money of Rs500,000, the award included a trophy designed by Pakistan’s leading ceramist Shazia Zuberi.
Writing from New York, Shahzia Sikandar shared that both the award and the participation in the Biennale was an honour for her as “this was the first time I was invited and my work was shown in Pakistan.” She was, however, unable to fly down to Pakistan due to an injury she suffered in October.
