The Supreme Court (SC) of Pakistan on Saturday accepted the petition of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif requesting the merger of corruption references filed against him in the accountability court.
According to the SC order, the date for hearing the petition had been set for November 6, and the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Saqib Nasir would hear the petition in his chamber. Earlier, Nawaz Sharif had submitted a petition in the Supreme Court in connection to three references filed against him by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB). The references included, Flagship Investment Ltd reference, Al-Azizia Steel Mills reference and Avenfield flats reference.
On November 6, the CJP would take a decision regarding approval or rejection of the said petition. The hearing would also decide objections made by the registrar office when the petition was initially filed in the above-mentioned office of the SC. Later, Nawaz Sharif had also filed a petition challenging the objections raised the SC registrar office.
The SC had earlier sent a detailed verdict in connection with review petitions filed by the former prime minister to 27 government departments, stating that no loopholes were identified in the disqualification order by the claimants.
Last Wednesday, the accountability court had rejected Nawaz Sharif’s plea requesting merger of references filed against him, and separately indicted the former premier in all three corruption references.
