Islamabad United appoints Rumman Raees as vice captain

Pakistan pacer Rumman Raees has been appointed Vice Captain of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchise, Islamabad United on Saturday.

In a press conference by Islamabad United owner Ali Naqvi, Head Coach Dean Jones and Director Cricket Waqar Younis, Raees was announced as the vice-captain and will serve under Captain Misbah-ul-Haq.

Former Pakistani spinner Saeed Ajmal has also been announced as spin bowling coach in the press conference which took place in Lahore.

“We’ve always aimed for this franchise to be similar to a family, and these two appointments are a continuation of that belief,” said team owner, Naqvi.

Naqvi commented that Rumman has come a long way from when he was picked up in first PSL draft, adding, “The way he has represented the franchise over the past two years made him the ideal candidate for this role.”

Coach Dean Jones said, “Rumman has developed himself into a great death bowler which is a difficult job. We believe in Rumman as a future leader for our franchise, and more importantly, as a future leader for Pakistan. We have been most impressed by him not only as a cricketer but also as an individual, and we will try to develop him even further in both these aspects.”

As for Ajmal, Naqvi said, “He’s been part of the Islamabad United family for two years and he’s a great person, and a great player and we are delighted to appoint him as our spin bowling coach.”

Naqvi said that the team’s staff had recommended Ajmal for the role and that the franchise has “always left the cricketing decisions to the cricket people.”

Jones also expressed his joy over Ajmal’s appointment saying, “We have already seen him help develop Shadab Khan in PSL 2 and we want him to continue doing that. This opportunity here helps him expand his coaching skills.”

Further adding ”He’s a great presence in the dressing room, and we wanted to make sure that he continued to be a part of it, and this allows us to do that

Islamabad United Director Cricket Waqar Younis also praised Ajmal’s appointment saying “Saeed is someone whom I have worked with for years and I know how important he is to the atmosphere of a dressing room.”

PSL 3 is scheduled to take place in February 2018. The drafts for the third edition will be held on Sunday in Lahore and each team will have to pick players from a pool of over 500 players to complete their squads.

The third edition will also see Imad Wasim captain Karachi Kings and Shahid Afridi play for Karachi Kings.
