Pakistanis settled in Denmark have been granted permission to hold dual citizenship after a notification issued by the Ministry of Interior on Saturday announced this.

The notification read, “Thirty thousand Pakistanis living in Denmark would benefit from the arrangement and be able to hold Danish nationality without renouncing the Pakistani nationality. More than 5,000 Pakistanis settled in Denmark visit Pakistan every year.”

The matter which had been pending with the federal government for a long time had created a lot of difficulties for the Pakistani community living in the European country. The unresolved issue had been brought up earlier this month by a top Pakistani envoy in Denmark.

With this step, Denmark has become the 19th country to have a treaty of dual nationality with Pakistan.

Apart from Denmark, the other countries which have this arrangement with Pakistan include Australia, Bahrain, Belgium, Britain, Canada, Egypt, Finland, France, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Jordan, Netherlands, New Zealand, Syria, Sweden, Switzerland and the US.

After approval from its parliament, the Danish government permitted Pakistanis with Danish nationality to have dual citizenship.
