Scorned suitor burns girl alive for refusing marriage

MANDI BAHAUDDIN: In a growing wave of violence against women in Pakistan, it has been reported that a girl was allegedly burned alive for rejecting a suitor’s marriage proposal in Mandi Bahauddin on Friday.

The girl was shifted to Aziz Bhatti Hospital Gujrat for immediate medical treatment where doctors have informed that the survivor sustained 60% burn injuries.

In her statement to the police, the girl stated that the suspect, Tassawur took her to his home by deception after the refusal of the marriage proposal and set her on fire.

The law enforcement authorities have arrested the suspect and have started investigations on the case.

According to latest reports Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has taken notice of the incident and has sought a report from the District Police Officer (DPO).

He ordered to the relevant authorities to take action against the responsible persons according to law and directed the administration to provide the best healthcare facilities to the girl.

Despite a number of laws passed in the national and respective provincial assemblies of the country, it appears that the laws have not deterred violence against women.

Pakistan ranked second worst country in the world for gender equality for a second year in a row by The World Economic Forum’s global gender gap report in 2016.
