KARACHI: Karachi Mayor Wasim Akhtar has directed Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) graveyards director to assess and review the documents related to the allocation of land to welfare organizations for establishment of graveyards.
He further directed that the record of all graveyards should be compiled so that proper assessment and future plans could be made in this connection.
He said that it was essential owing to the complaints of the citizens that full and proper details are made available on the lands allocated for graveyards so that the rightful use of these lands could be ascertained.
He also directed for all KMC graveyard records to be linked through computerised registration with the central office. He said that out of 152 graveyards in Karachi only 55 were registered. Preparation of complete data of the unregistered graveyards was essential, he added.
He also directed that bylaws regarding graveyards should be prepared without delay, adding that union council chairpersons should be instructed not to issue death certificates without a challan from KMC.
The mayor also inquired about the progress on the development of a new graveyard being prepared in Surjani Town and instructed that work on it should be finished promptly.
