Imran reiterates call for early polls to ‘save and strengthen democracy’

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan on Friday repeated his call for early election, saying the country needs early polls to save and strengthen democracy in wake of “looming economic disaster and a complete paralysis of governance”.

The PTI chief, in a series of tweets, also referred to a World Bank report on the state of Pakistan’s economy.

According to a report released by World Bank on Thursday, inflation would increase to six percent next year as it linked Pakistan’s bullish economic prospects with the continuation of reforms to address the current and fiscal account deficits.

The PTI chief also reasserted his demand for early elections in a bid to eradicate corruption from the country while speaking to the media after attending a public gathering in upper Chitral.

“There is no such thing as a government in the country. It will be more beneficial for the public if elections are held sooner. The money that should be spent on the public is used in corruption. The nation will not accept a third NRO [National Reconciliation Ordinance],” he said.

The PTI chief further claimed that when there are doubts over a government’s mandate, the call for elections was not against the democracy.
