Police searching for 10 suspects in Karachi DHA rape case

KARACHI: The police are looking for 10 suspects for allegedly raping a woman at a hotel in Defence Housing Authority.

The woman, whose name is being withheld to protect her identity, approached the Sahil police station to register a case against Faraz Ashraf and nine others for allegedly raping her in a hotel room on the night of October 28. On the woman’s complaint, the police registered FIR No 111/17 against 10 suspects, three of whom have been identified by name in the FIR.

“We have dual nationality – Pakistani and American. Faraz was my sister’s friend. He forcibly took my sister to the hotel,” the complainant’s brother told media. He also claimed that the family has been receiving threatening calls from the suspects.

“They are offering us money for compensation but we don’t want money. What we want is justice,” the brother said, adding that the family had necessary evidence against the suspects.

The brother added that the family would approach the United States consulate in case the police failed to arrest the perpetrators. “My sister was beaten up and recordings at the hotel prove it,” he claimed.

According to the brother, the family registered the case Sunday night and the medical tests of the complainant would be conducted on Tuesday.

Commenting on the case, South Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Javed Akbar Riaz said the complainant, in her statement to the police, named Faraz and his friends for the crime. The officer added that the complainant had torture marks on her body which suggest that she was beaten up while offering resistance or engaged in a scuffle. However, he said nothing could conclusively be said before the investigations were completed.
