Mayor urges taking court cases seriously

KARACHI: Karachi Mayor Wasim Akhtar, while chairing a meeting on the issues of law department in his office on Tuesday, stressed the need for lawyers to take pending cases in courts seriously.

Legal Affairs Committee Chairman Arif Khan, Land Committee Chairman Syed Arshad Hasan, City Council parliamentary leader Aslam Shah Afridi, law advisor Saeed Akhtar, technical director SM Shukaib, finance director Mehmood Baig, members of the legal committee,  penal advocates and prosecutors of law department, and other officers attended the meeting.

The mayor said the department has to play effective role in the disposal of all such cases in the favor of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) so that illegal activities like encroachments, land grabbing and food adulteration and sale of impure food items could be stopped in the city.

The mayor taking strict notice of the nonappearance of KMC lawyers in the courts on the date of hearing said no such practice will be tolerated any further and the absent officers will be removed in this case.

He enquired about the cases handed over to panel of advocates and prosecutors on behalf of KMC and directed that all updates regarding pending cases should be regularly sent to the legal committee so that it could decide on these cases.

He said that no one will be paid remuneration without attending to his duties and that all such officials as are not attending to their duties should be removed immediately.

He said that suggestions and recommendations of legal committee of the city council will be implemented for the betterment of the department.

Legal Committee Chairman Arif Khan Advocate said members of the committee had worked hard to shift the law department in its new premises and its affairs were now being monitored in the light of rules and policy to bring further improvement in its performance.
