KARACHI: Scores of physically-challenged persons protested outside the Sindh Assembly, demanding for the implementation of an increased job quota for disabled persons on Monday.
Protestors on wheelchairs and walking sticks, sat at the entrance of the Sindh Assembly building, chanting slogans and holding placards and banners.
Zubair Soomro, a demonstrator who travelled from Khairpur Mir to attend the protest shared his woes saying, “We are facing a host of problems. Five per cent job quota has not been implemented despite promises from the government.”
Ministers and members of the provincial assembly did not much heed to the protests. Advisor to the Chief Minister of Sindh on Social Welfare Shamim Mumtaz, while speaking to a private media outlet, defended the government’s policies and said that the genuine issues brought forward by the protestors would be addressed and resolved.
“It is only the Pakistan People’s Party [PPP] government which has given rights to disabled person,” said Mumtaz. “We have passed a bill to increase jobs from two to five per cent,” he added.
In December 2016, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah had increased the quota for people with disabilities in government jobs from 2 per cent to 5 per cent.
In spite of the app being free as well as its built-in capability to remove snaps, it accumulates on the old regular monthly bill.
