Nawaz summons PML-N meeting in Islamabad

— PML-N president to chair meeting at Punjab House

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) President Muhammad Nawaz Sharif has summoned an important meeting of the party leaders here today to discuss important issues, including the country’s political situation, legislative matters before the National Assembly, legal matters and demand by some political parties for early elections.

According to reports, Nawaz Sharif will leave Lahore for Islamabad today and chair the party meeting at the Punjab House. In addition to party matters, the huddle will also discuss the political situation and cases against the former prime minister and his family and Minister for Finance Senator Muhammad Ishaq Dar.

“Some party leaders wanted to meet Nawaz and that is why the meeting has been called in Islamabad,” said Senator Asif Kirmani.

According to PML-N’s chairman Senator Raja Zafarul Haq, the meeting would be attended by senior party leaders and presided over by the deposed prime minister himself. He added that the venue was selected personally by Nawaz.

Sources in the ruling PML-N said the meeting would formulate a future strategy as regards the graft cases the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has brought against ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif and his family.

They said the meeting would also chalk out a plan for the next general elections, adding that the party is likely to spearhead its election campaign from the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

The sources further said that the huddle was being held in an attempt to dispel rumours of rifts within the party. They said that it was important to address concerns of key party leaders while seeking their input on party position.

“It is crucial to dismiss such rumours,” the sources said, adding that it was also important to obtain feedback from key party leaders. Nawaz is expected to stay in Islamabad till the next court hearing.
