LONDON: Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi said Friday that a “great burden” rests on the shoulders of Pakistan’s judiciary in the case of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, as it is necessary that justice must be seen to be done.

He said this on a visit to London for a conference, titled “Future of Pakistan 2017”, where he would make a keynote speech on the condition of the country.

The PM made the remarks in reference to former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s case, who is currently facing National Accountability Bureau (NAB) cases under the supervision of a Supreme Court judge.

Talking to reporters, PM Abbasi said that dispensation of justice was primarily witnessed through the behaviour and actions of courts. “The first step towards delivering justice is that the process should be seen by all while being carried out.”

It merits mention here that Abbasi had previously said that Nawaz Sharif did not get a fair trial at the Supreme Court, which resulted in his disqualification.

The “Future of Pakistan 2017” conference, where the PM was invited to speak on the current state of Pakistan, had been organised by the Pakistan Development Society, in collaboration with the South Asia Centre at the London School of Economics (LSE). The event was aimed to unite academics, experts and politicians under one roof to discuss and debate the future direction of Pakistan in relation to the impact of government policies on the people of the country.

Speaking to reporters, LSE Pakistan Development Society President and lead organiser Omer Azhar Bhatti said the event was held to ensure fruitful interaction between top-level academics, policy-makers, and senior political personalities from Pakistan.

Omer said that this year’s conference was bringing together prominent Pakistan People’s Party and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leaders on a single platform provided at LSE. He said that participants would include Senator Sherry Rehman and Qamar Zaman Kaira, along with Special Assistant to the PM on Economic Affairs Miftah Ismail and Senator Abdul Qayyum. Moreover, prominent journalists would also speak on the occasion and discuss diverse topics related to Pakistan.

The highlight of the entire event was the interaction between LSE students and PM Abbasi after the latter’s keynote address. The prime minister was invited by the South Asia Centre at LSE to become a part of the discussion related to the well-being of Pakistan.
