Govt working hard for safer communities: PDMA project director

 LAHORE: Lahore College for Women University Environmental Science Department in collaboration with Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) and Punjab Emergency Service (Rescue 1122) arranged an awareness walk on the issue collectively adopting precautions against natural disasters.

A large number of students from university participated in the walk holding placards and banners with public service messages for the awareness of the general public. The theme of the event was ‘Tayar Pakistan’, designed to highlight anticipation of hazards and threats and to enhance infrastructural development that was disaster proof.

While speaking on the occasion, Project Director Hameed Ullah Malik stated that PDMA Punjab was endeavouring to establish a socially responsible, healthy and resilient community. He expressed grief over the sad demise of victims who lost their lives in the catastrophic earthquake of 2005, adding that such incidents provided the opportunity for capacity building.

The project director further revealed that in order to minimize disasters, PDMA Punjab has initiated Early Warning & Response System through satellite-based connectivity by integrating Meteorological, Environment, & Rescue 1122 departments.

PDMA Project Coordinator Nisar Ahmed Sani was also present on the occasion and stated that “PDMA has initiated Disaster Risk Reduction Program (DRRP) to ensure safety measures”.

He concluded that a Community Emergency Response Training (CERT) Programme has been initiated to train the citizens for the establishment of safer communities in all districts of Punjab.
