ISLAMABAD: Responding to criticism on the provision of security to former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, Minister of State for Information Marriyum Aurangzeb on Thursday stated that security was necessary for a person who has fought against terrorism.

She said that it was security, and not “protocol”, that was given to Sharif, adding that the people of Pakistan have understood the difference between the two.

She further said that Sharif had set a precedent by appearing for his hearing in court to be held on Friday. Sharif has brought educational reforms and prosperity to the country and does not need to escape courts or accountability, she added.

State Minister for Interior Affairs Talal Chaudhry also commented on the matter, saying that Sharif was given security since he is the most important person in the country and that those who hold issues against it may have them if they please.

He added that Sharif had returned to Pakistan not only to appear before the court but to actively participate in the country’s politics.

Earlier in the day, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairperson Imran Khan posted a tweet criticising the “official protocol” given to “discredited prime minister” Sharif, adding that it was wrong for the government to use taxpayers’ money for the purpose.
