DERA ISMAIL KHAN: Recent findings in the case involving the public shaming of a teenage girl by walking her naked through a village reveal that she was being “punished” for her brother’s crimes.
The 16-year-old was returning home from a household errand on October 27 in a village in DI Khan, when goons surrounded her and made her go through this shameful ordeal.
The “sin” of the poor girl was that her brother had allegedly been involved in a relationship with another girl from the village. Piling more insult over the already despicable crime, fellow villagers refused to help the victim for the entirety of the hour in which the episode unfolded. The villagers cite “fear” of the hoodlums as excuse for not helping the poor woman.
Moreover, it took many visits of the victim’s family to the local police station before they ceded to register a case against the perpetrators, the girl’s family revealed.
Reports say that a case was also registered against the victim’s own family.
Police have said that eight suspects linked to the incident have been arrested. The prime suspect Sajawal, however, still runs free.
Taking notice of the incident, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Chief Minister Pervaiz Khattak has ordered KP Inspector General (IG) Salahuddin Masood to punish the culprits.
Three years ago, the brother of the victim was found involved in a relationship with a girl from the village. A panchayat, which included the tehsil nazim, had fined the boy’s family a sum of Rs105,000 as punishment.
What sin ? He was just having a relationship. Police should chop their heads ! This is unacceptable !
