University of Sargodha to offer new degree on ‘mobile journalism’

SARGODHA: University of Sargodha (UoS) Vice-Chancellor Dr Ishtiaq Ahmed announced that the university was going to start a specialized degree in mobile journalism for media and communication students from next year

He made the announcement in the two-day national symposium on “roles, responsibilities and ethics of media in Pakistan”.

He further announced that a multi-media centre will be built for the students of communication and media studies and will be available to be used by next semester.

Speaking on the occasion, senior journalist and anchorperson Fahad Hussain emphasised the need for fairness, accuracy and process of verification in journalism

Pakistan Electronic and Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) Director General (DG) Javaid Iqbal said that Pakistani electronic media was long out of infancy, and it now needed to implement the set code of ethics for broadcasting. “With greater influence comes greater responsibility,” he said.

Analyst Imtiaz Gul highlighted the role of media in the age of geopolitics and geo-economics, saying that politically and socio-economically stronger states would be ruling the world in the coming era and this can only happen with media’s cooperation. Media constitutes the “the fourth pillar of the state” he added.

The event was attended by multiple field journalists, analysts and academic figures from across the country and various themes like ‘social responsibilities of media’, ‘media ethics in digital age’, ‘issues and practices of contemporary media’ and ‘laws and issues of traditional and new media’ were discussed and debated on the occasion.
