ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Monday filed an application in the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) seeking scrutiny of the accounts of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and other political parties.
PTI Secretary Finance Sardar Azhar Tariq filed the application.
In the application, the PTI stated that it submitted details of party’s accounts for 2010 to 2017 in the ECP. It added that unfortunately, the ECP had not sought details of party funds from any other party except PTI. The PTI demanded that the commission seek details of party funds from other political parties, including PML-N and PPP.
Talking to media after submitting the application in ECP, PTI leader Naeemul Haque said that arguments in Imran Khan’s disqualification case have been concluded. He added that objections have been raised on PTI funding and allegations have been levelled that PTI received funds from prohibited sources.
Haque said that the man who was expelled from PTI moved to ECP against the party in the garb of foreign funding.
He informed that PTI had submitted its reply in the ECP pertaining to the foreign funding case. He demanded that the ECP must carry out scrutiny of other parties’ accounts and funds.
It is to be mentioned here that the PTI has already filed an application in ECP for scrutiny of PPP and PML-N party accounts and funds.
Haque claimed that the parties’ own auditors have discovered glaring irregularities in their accounts.
Haque said there is an impression among the people that the ECP is only targetting the PTI when it comes to probing a party’s funding, adding that, “the ECP’s reputation shouldn’t be tainted with the next election around the corner”.
He asserted that a thorough examination of other parties’ accounts is needed.
Claiming that “PTI doesn’t have anything to hide,” Haque stated that they have submitted to the ECP, the party’s accounts details from 2010 to 2017.
“Justice should be seen to be done by the ECP,” asserted the PTI leader.
The PTI has been facing the ‘foreign funding case’ in the ECP, filed by the party’s disgruntled founding member Akbar Babar, since 2014.
Babar had filed a petition seeking the disqualification of PTI Chairman Imran Khan for allegedly obtaining funding from illegal sources and discrepancies in the party’s accounts.
