39 per cent Pakistanis want Friday to be weekly holiday

ISLAMABAD: According to a Gilani Research Foundation Survey carried out by Gallup and Gilani Pakistan, public opinion in Pakistan is divided evenly over the weekly holiday, as 39 per cent said that the holiday should be on Friday while 39 per cent favoured Sunday.

A nationally representative sample of men and women from across the four provinces were asked the question: “Some people believe that the weekly holiday should be on Friday again, while some people believe that Sunday is fine. What is your opinion about it?” In response, around 39 per cent chose Friday while 39 per cent voted for Sunday as the perfect weekly holiday.

Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, in one of his early tenures in 1997, had declared Friday as a half working day and Sunday as Pakistan´s weekly holiday by reversing a government policy dating back to 1977.

The recent survey was carried out amongst a sample of 1,752 men and women in rural and urban areas of all four provinces of the country. The survey was held between September 25 to October 1. Error of margin during the survey was estimated to be approximately ± 2-3 per cent, thus showing 95 per cent confidence level.
