Number of suspected chikungunya cases on the rise

KARACHI: The number of suspected chikungunya cases rose in Karachi as twelve more patients were admitted to hospitals, taking the total number of patients up to 243 since October 1.

According to a report issued by Sindh Health Department, a total 4,602 chikungunya suspected cases have been reported across the province since January 1.

The number of suspected chikungunya cases during October has reached 254 across Sindh, of which 243 cases have been reported from Karachi.

In 2016, the number of suspected chikungunya cases reported from Karachi was 405.

Chikungunya is transmitted to humans by infected mosquitoes and its symptoms include high fever, joint pains, joint swellings, rashes, headaches, muscle pains, nausea and fatigue. The chikungunya is rarely fatal, with the death rate of those afflicted with the disease is less than one percent.
