At least 16 people scalded in steel mill accident

HATTAR: At least 16 people were scalded in an accident involving the explosion of a boiler at Ittehad Steel Mills in Hattar Industrial Estate on Wednesday.

According to the mill workers, a steel rope holding tonnes of molten steel broke, causing an explosion and severe injuries to several workers.

Hattar police and workers of other factories in the Hattar Industrial Estate reached the spot and began a rescue operation. The injured were shifted to the burn unit of Pakistan Ordinance Factories (POF) Wah Hospital where 7 scalded workers were declared critical.

Speaking to media, SHO Hadi Pristan Tanoli said that the condition of seven out of the 16 injured workers was critical. They have been shifted to the Intensive Care Unit of POF Wah burn unit. He further said that a case against the owner Abdul Jaleel and General Manager Jamshed was registered in Hattar police station under Section 337 L.

The burnt workers were identified as Akra, Faiz Rasheed, Shahid Rasheed, Jahangir, Sajid Ali, Waqas, Shahbaz, Waseem, Afzal, Fazal Ahmed, Saifullah, Nadeem, Saddam, Naeem Abbass, Muhammad Sher and Khursheed.
