MULTAN: Enraged Mureed Hussain Qureshi, custodian of the shrine of Sufi saint Bahauddin Zakariya, repeatedly slapped a devotee in public for barring his son from entering the shrine.
Thousands of devotees had gathered for the three-day event to mark the 778th Urs of the Sufi saint in Multan.
Qureshi, the brother of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leader Shah Mehmood Qureshi, repeatedly slapped the man, who continued to apologise with folded hands. The man, later, bowed down to Qureshi’s feet in apology.
The video footage of the incident showed that while the devotee was being brutally slapped by the Pir or spiritual leader, no one was seen to come to his rescue.
Following the incident, Qureshi while talking to media stated, “he is our devotee; actually, he was pushing the people here. You know it happens,” he stated.
Earlier, in his speech, Qureshi lashed out at his brother, Shah Mehmood Qureshi accusing him of making the spiritual successor’s seat political.
“I have warned you (Shah Mehmood) many times. But you have sworn to drown the family’s name and religion for politics,” he said.
He went on to term his brother ‘a seller of graves’.
“We have given you the title of Makhdoom, but you know what people call you, seller of graves,” the spiritual leader said. “Only Allah and I know how you got land. You will be accountable in the court of Almighty for usurping the land of the poor.”
