QUETTA: Rescue personnel have recovered the bodies of six coal miners from a coalmine parts of which collapsed on Thursday night in Balochistan’s Harnai district.

Mines Chief Inspector Iftikhar Ahmed reported that a landslide occurred at two places in the Sharig coal mine in Harnai on Thursday. Two miners got trapped under the earth mass initially before six other men tried to rescue their colleagues and got trapped themselves.

He said that a rescue operation to recover the two remaining miners is underway, but there is little likelihood that the miners are still alive. He has also ordered an investigation to be carried out regarding the incident.

Poor working conditions in the coal mines of Balochistan result in the death of hundreds of miners, many of which go unreported. An accident involving accumulation of poisonous gases at another coal mine in Harnai claimed the lives of three coal miners last month.
