ISLAMABAD/WASHINGTON – In what is a departure from usual diplomatic protocols, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson will visit Islamabad next week on a specially designed drone, a press release issued by the US State Department said on Wednesday.

This would be the first time any state official would travel to another country on a drone. It is also believed to be the first occasion when a man would travel on an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).

According to the US State Department, Tillerson would travel to Pakistan in an Almost-ready-to-fly (ARF), hand-held drone that would fly at around 2,000 ft (600 m) altitude, traveling around 11,000 km, which is 5,500 times its usual capacity.

The State Department officials reveal that the drone has been specially designed to ‘mark a new era of trust’ between the US and Pakistan.

However, sources privy to the drone trajectory in the US military reveal that the exact landing spot is yet to be confirmed.

“We are waiting for our counterparts in Pakistan to give us the location for a safe haven for the US Secretary of State’s landing,” the official said.

However, White House officials have denied reports that the Tillerson drone would target the Pakistani parliament.

“We’ll do that once all the terrorists are safely inside the Parliament,” an official said.
