PBTA secretary inspects blood banks, orders closures of substandard units

LAHORE: Punjab Blood Transfusion Authority (PBTA) Secretary Dr Muhammad Athar visited Sialkot, Narowal, Daska and Pasrur along with his technical team to inspect the government and private blood units.

It was noticed that the staff working at blood units needed urgent training to improve their practices. In a raid conducted at various illegal blood banks in these areas, stolen blood bags were recovered from Sharif Lab opposite THQ Daska. The blood was stolen from various governmental blood units at Lahore. The matter is being further probed.

The working of Young Blood Foundation at Fawara Chowk in Daska was also substandard. Poor quality blood was being delivered to patients. Poor quality of blood and service was also discovered at other laboratories.

On the other hand, the good quality of blood and blood banking practices by Memorial Christian Hospital at Paris Road, Sialkot and Sundus Foundation Sialkot were appreciated. Dr Muhammad Athar said that PBTA is working for the provision of safe and healthy blood to all patients across the province and the substandard blood banks would not be allowed to play with the lives of patients.
