GENEVA: Pakistan’s United Nations Permanent Representative Farukh Amil has called for steps to prevent the weaponisation of outer space in an address to the General Assembly Disarmament and International Security Committee in Geneva.
Amil emphasised the need for outer space to be explored and used for peaceful purposes only. He said that the emergence of outer space as a new realm of conflict and arms race needed to be addressed properly.
He pointed out that the dominance enjoyed by certain countries in outer space due to their technological prowess would not last forever as other states would soon be catching up. Developing countries would not bear the burden of non-proliferation or be subject to discriminatory restrictions which hampered their peaceful pursuits in outer space, he said.
