Opera singer Saira Peter to perform at PNCA on Oct 23

ISLAMABAD: Renowned London-based Pakistani Sufi opera star Saira Peter will perform in a musical concert to be held at the Pakistan National Council of the Arts (PNCA) on October 23.

During the concert, Saira, who is Pakistan’s first opera singer, would give performances on her recently released national song, titled ‘Aye Sar Zameen’, and other songs from her new album.

Talking to reporters, Saira Peter said that she had been a part of the music profession since the past 16 years. She said that, “I have performed in many countries around the world, but nothing can match the feeling of coming back home. The love for my country and its people is the greatest motivation for me in my creative pursuits.”

She said that singing spiritual Sufi poetry was her passion and she was proud to spread the teachings of Sufism across the world.

The singer further said that opera music was spiritual at its core and that was the primary reason why this form of singing had helped to spread the message of peace in a globalised world.

Presently, the London-based singer had been working on her new Sufi musical album, titled ‘Tu Habib, Tu Tabib’, which comprised of poetry written by renowned Sufi saints. namely Baba Bulleh Shah and Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai.

It is important to mention here that Saira was born in Karachi and had moved to London later on to pursue a career in music. She trained to become an opera singer under Paul Knight, who was a student of renowned English composer Benjamin Britten, considered a legend in Western classical music. Praising her mentor, Saira said that, “I am proud to have trained under Paul Knight and think of him as my true teacher.”

The singer also said that, “Sufism is an important part of the Pakistani culture. Celebrated Sufi poets have woven together beautiful messages of peace and love in their poetry, and I wanted to bring this tradition to the West in their own musical language.”
