After failing to deal with the ongoing protests held by the students of Quaid-e-Azam University (QAU), the Islamabad police on Wednesday issued arrest warrants for 37 students of the university, in an effort to reinitiate academic activities suspended since the past two weeks.
Students and university management, since October 4, have locked horns over the issue of expulsion of some students due to misconduct. The protestors demanded restoration of the expelled students along with making other demands, including provision of basic facilities at the university and the recent hike in fees.
During the protest, students had blocked the main university road and stopped university transport from shuttling students and faculty to the university. Earlier in the month, the strike was called by students on a call from Quaidian Student Foundation.
During talks with the QAU Vice Chancellor (VC) Dr Javed Ashraf, the protesting students demanded the immediate restoration of the expelled students, on which the VC informed them that he had no power to do so, but promised to place the issue before the university syndicate.
According to latest reports, different police teams have been formed for the arrest of all 37 students during raids which would be conducted in the next 24 hours.
