LAHORE: A decision to stage a sit-in outside the Punjab Assembly Tuesday was announced by the Pakistan Kissan Ittehad (PKI) leaders following the failure of negotiations with top police on Monday.
A mass protest organised by the PKI continued for the second day as the farmers demonstrate at Lahore’s Thokar Niaz Baig, following announcement to march towards Punjab Assembly.
Hundreds of farmers staged a demonstration making their way into the provincial metropolis from southern Punjab districts late Monday, demanding the release of pending amounts worth 30 billion rupees from sugar mills owners and subsidy on various agricultural items.
The protesters have blocked Multan Road from both sides causing disruption to traffic flow.
The farmers were barred from entering into Lahore when the police blocked Multan Road near Thokar Niaz Baig with containers.
However, the containers were later removed on Tuesday when the angry protesters hurled wooden sticks at the enforcement authorities.
The farmers claim they will not end protest unless their demands are met.
