ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad Police, on the directions of Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) Administration Assistant Commissioner Saad Bin Asad, has booked a cleric of a local mosque for criticising the favourable statement of Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah in regard to the Ahmadi community. However, the cleric is walking free after getting a bail from the police station concerned.

Last Friday during the sermon, the cleric, named Shakeel Ahmed, of Faizan-e-Kutb Al Madina mosque, located in sector G-11/4, reportedly condemned the statement of Punjab law minister by saying that favourable statements for the Ahmadi community coming from people holding positions of power in the country was an indication that the country was headed towards demise.

Sources said that the cleric had categorically stated in his sermon that Sanaullah could not be considered a Muslim anymore, while adding that the cleric often criticised the national policies and politicians as well.

A source, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said that, “A large number of ICT administration employees offered Friday prayers in the same mosque, but none of them had ever bothered to take necessary action to stop the cleric from giving hate speeches and provoking the people against the sitting government.”

Another source said that an outsider, who came to offer prayers in the mosque on Friday, had later approached the district magistrate to bring the matter to his knowledge, after which a case was registered against the mentioned cleric in Ramna police station.

An official of ICT, while requesting anonymity, said that the case was registered under just one section and the administration and police deliberately did not mention the said episode regarding Ahmadis because they believed that the matter could provoke people to indulge in violence.
