NAB needs reforms, not expansion in jurisdiction: CM

LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif said that there is a need for introducing reforms to improve the performance of the National Accountability Bureau to eliminate corruption instead of expanding its jurisdiction to judiciary and army.

In a statement, the chief minister said that the country has suffered irreparable loss due to corruption, and a strict and credible system of accountability is sorely needed to uproot the menace for the stability of Pakistan.

Sharif further said that NAB’s current condition and past history shows that the institution has failed to carry out accountability of corrupt elements of society and of those who have looted the national treasury. He said that there have been cases in which action has not been taken against corrupt elements despite clear instructions from courts.

CM Shehbaz Sharif said that instead of increasing its jurisdiction to the superior judiciary and the army, NAB should operate with more honesty and fairness. He said that institutions like judiciary and army have their own systems and methods of accountability which can be improved according to the needs of the time. He further added that he could not refrain from expressing his displeasure at the hypocrisy of those political parties which had made the proposal of enhancing NAB’s jurisdiction.
