ISLAMABAD: The illicit business of drugs is thriving just under the nose of Police special branch head office in sector G-7, and anyone with money can buy drugs from here and use it without any fear of police due to the alleged involvement of the force in the dirty trade, Pakistan Today has been learnt.
In spite of heavy police and rangers’ activity in the city, one can still easily observe the a growing population of drug addicts in and around the slums of G-7, but the local police seems to have shuts its eyes to the ongoing drug business and consumption.
According to a source, a group of drug peddlers is smuggling plenty of various drugs from KPK and Punjab to quarter number 66, G-7 allegedly in connivance of the local police officials. Islamabad police have to redouble their cooperation with other security agencies against organized crime in order to save lives of youngsters.
“It is impossible for anyone to import or smuggle liquor, drugs from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab into the slums of sector G-7 and then distribute it to local vendors who further provide it in different schools, colleges, universities, and institutions, without bribing the most effective information providing agency, special branch and police officials of concerned police station,” said a police official while requesting anonymity.
Abpara Station House Officer (SHO) Khalid Awan, upon contact, said that the sector had become a den of drug addicts and all smugglers in the area have been identified by the law enforcement agencies.
“I chalked out a grand operation against the menace of drugs being smuggled and supplied in the said area against a six-man group of drug peddlers which would be started in a day or two,” he said.
It is important to mention here that marijuana was found to be the most commonly used drug in Pakistan as 3.6 percent of the adult population, or four million people, are listed as users according to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime report (UNODC).
However, Abpara Deputy Superintendent Police (DSP) Fida Satti said that they have registered different cases against the drug traffickers.
“Four cases were recently registered under different sections on the first day of Muharram-ul-Haram after a successful raid in alliance with Rangers and other security agencies,” he said.
It may be mentioned here that there are more than 40 illegal and unauthorised slums in the capital which imposes a serious security threat and non-registration of residents there are among the key reasons of increasing street crime cases.
