ISLAMABAD: As many as 97 meteorological stations have been providing weather data at district level in the country whereas 40 districts are still without a weather station.

Currently, seven radars are installed at Islamabad, Mangla, Sialkot, Lahore, Rahimyar Khan, Dera Ismail Khan and Karachi which covers almost 60 percent area of the whole country.

In addition, 20 seismic stations have been providing earthquake information from different parts of the country, an official of Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) told a news channel on Friday. Most of the equipment had become very old and could not fulfill the forecasting demand under climate change, he added.

The official said a comprehensive proposal had been submitted to the government for upgrading PMD which was being considered at the highest level. He further informed that Pakistan was a signatory of United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Kyoto Protocol and recent Paris Agreement and it had ratified the Convention and Protocol whereas the Doha Amendment and Paris Agreement are currently being processed. This was in accordance with international legal obligations, he added.
