ISLAMABAD: The celebrations held as part of the World Space Week (WSW) in the federal capital by the Institute of Space Technology (IST) continued on the second day and attracted large numbers of science lovers, students and people belonging to different walks of life.
The four-day activity based programme was launched by the IST in collaboration with the National Space Agency of Pakistan (SUPARCO) to celebrate WSW.
WSW would generate space awareness among the students representing a large number of schools and colleges of the twin cities, besides also enlightening the general public about the topic. The WSW began with an elegant inaugural ceremony on October 4 where SUPARCO Chairman Qaiser Anees Khurram was the chief guest.
He applauded the efforts of IST for creating awareness about space technology among the youth and educating the students about the benefits of space technology for modern states.
It is important to mention here that WSW is celebrated in accordance with the United Nations (UN) General Assembly declaration of 1999. The Third UN Conference on the Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UNISPACE III) came up with the suggestion to celebrate WSW. Pakistan is endeavouring to enter into the realm of space science and technology.
This year’s theme for WSW is “Exploring New Worlds in Space”. This theme would enable people to hold discussions and debates revolving around the topics ranging from space exploration to mission to Mars and beyond. The week is celebrated in an effort to inspire educators to set up exciting space exploration events at schools, universities, science centres, astronomy clubs, and even museums.
