ISLAMABAD: Awami Muslim League chief Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed Wednesday challenged the Elections Bill 2017 in the Supreme Court (SC) on grounds that the changes were made to the bill to accommodate a disqualified person. An amendment to the elections bill had paved way for ousted premier to become president of the ruling PML-N.
Rasheed’s application submitted by Barrister Farogh Naseem states that changes to a law could not be made to accommodate a disqualified person.
The petition stated that amending a law is an attempt that has been made to qualify a man who was disqualified by five judges of the Supreme Court. “The bottom line is that no disqualified person should become chief of a political party”.
He condemned the party leadership for being unable to decide upon a suitable person to lead the party.
Rasheed observed that never in the history could an instance be sighted where an amendment to the constitution was made in defiance of the SC’s orders.
The petition further states that amendments to Khatm-e-Naboowat laws represent efforts to please the western world.
