Khursheed Shah says Opp to nominate ‘most suitable person’ for NAB top post

ISLAMABAD: Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Syed Khursheed Shah said that the opposition would nominate the most suitable person for the chairmanship of National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

Talking to media persons Monday, the opposition leader said the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has authorised him for nominating the NAB chairman.

He assured the nation that the name proposed by the opposition would be before everyone. He said opposition parties are suggesting names of judges, generals or bureaucrats for the proposed list.

The nominee would be finalised after looking into the past service records of the proposed nominees to up to 30 years, he added.

Under the National Accountability Ordinance, the appointment of NAB chairman is made by the prime minister in consultation with the leader of opposition.

The appointment has become all the more important as the new chairman will deal with cases of the Sharif family being reopened by NAB on the orders of the Supreme Court.

Incumbent NAB Chairman Qamar Zaman Chaudhry was appointed with the consent of both the then prime minister Nawaz Sharif and Khursheed Shah. But Chaudhry became controversial from the very first day as the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf rejected his appointment and alleged that Chaudhry would not be impartial while dealing with the cases of the Sharif and Zardari families.
