ISLAMABAD: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leaders on Wednesday demanded Finance Minister Ishaq Dar’s resignation after he was indicted by an accountability court in an assets reference case.

Addressing a press conference in Islamabad, Senator Sherry Rehman, while dismissing claims that the PPP supports former premier Nawaz Sharif, said that the party made it clear that it won’t support Nawaz once he was disqualified.

“Nawaz is saving himself, not a democracy,” she said.

Lashing out at the ruling party for prioritising their leader Nawaz over the country, she said that the economic situation of the country has become dismal.

She also criticised the PML-N representatives for not respecting the judiciary, asking “why would a common respect court verdicts if the rulers aren’t”.

PPP leader Saleem Mandiwalla has said that the finance minister was indicted over graft charges which is embarrassing for the country. The party had recommended during a Senate committee’s session that Dar should resign but the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) did not agree, he lamented.

An accountability court on Wednesday indicted Finance Minister Ishaq Dar in connection with a corruption reference that was filed against him by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

However, Dar denied all charges against him relating to the accumulation of assets and funds beyond known sources of income.

Dar appeared in court on Monday after bailable warrants for his arrest were issued and the NAB had also raided his house and frozen his assets.

The Supreme Court had directed NAB to prepare a reference against Dar for possessing assets more than he had declared in the light of the Panama Case verdict announced by the apex court on July 28.
