SHC seeks replies over plea against $70m given to Maryam by Michelle Obama

KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Tuesday sought replies till October 16 over a petition seeking a probe into the money given to ex-prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s daughter Maryam Nawaz by former US president Barack Obama’s wife Michelle Obama.

During the hearing, the plaintiff told the court that Michelle Obama gave $70 million to Maryam for the education of children in Pakistan but no one knows where that amount was used.

The petitioner further requested the court to order the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to investigate the matter so that the reality can be traced.

The deputy attorney general said that they have been waiting for replies from the federal departments over which the court adjourned the proceeding till October 16.

On July 3, 2016, Maryam Nawaz and Michelle Obama launched the “Let Girls Learn” programme at the White House, to work closely on expanding opportunities for education of young girls in Pakistan.

Michelle Obama had given $70 million to the former premier’s daughter for the programme.
